Jean Slick, MEd

Jean joined the faculty as program head of the Master of Arts in Disaster and Emergency Management program in 2009 after a number of years as associate faculty for the program. Prior to her arrival, she was the Director of Disaster Management for western Canada with the Canadian Red Cross. She has been working in the field of disaster management for over 20 years, and has direct experience with many of the major disasters in Canada during this period. Jean's primary interests are disaster recovery, assessment, sheltering, and strategic planning and coordination.

Following the tsunami in 2004, Jean was posted to Indonesia for two years, as the Country Representative for the Canadian Red Cross recovery program. This program provided a range of transitional supports to households impacted by the disaster and is rebuilding 6,000 permanent homes. Following the Yogyakarta earthquake, Jean helped to support the initial response. She has additional international disaster management experience in the Caribbean, Central America and the former Soviet Union, and thus brings both theoretical knowledge of, and practical experience with, disasters in a variety of contexts.

In response to a request from the Government of Canada in 1999 for independent monitoring of the conditions of detention of Chinese marine arrivals, Jean led the development of a Red Cross detention monitoring program and managed this national program for many years. She has consulted and trained on refugee protection and immigration detention issues in Australia.

Jean has a passion for teaching, a strong ability to bridge between theory and practice, and a keen interest in the supporting and developing the individual interests of students.
